Mere – 7 Quirky Facts
- UFO
It sits on the edge of the Salisbury plains which is the area with the highest concentration of UFO sightings in the UK. “They’re out there!” - Fosse Way
It straddles the A303 which itself sits on parts of the Fosse Way, an ancient Roman road linking the South West with other Roman centres of population. - Barrows
There are a number of ‘barrows’ in the area, some overlooking Mere. Barrows are ancient burial grounds where important figures would be buried, often with some of their most treasured possessions. This has lead to many barrows being ravaged by treasure hunters over the centuries. - Prince Charlie
HRH Prince Charles and the Duchy of Cornwall own much of the land in the area. The Prince has a particular interest in agriculture and sustainable farming practises that are gentle to the environment. - King of the Castle
Mere castle was built by the Richard, Earl of Cornwall (and brother of Henry III) in 1253. Originally it had six towers, plus inner buildings and was mostly made of stone. Over the centuries most of the stone has been carried away (most likely to be used on other buildings in the town) and only the raised earthworks remain. The site of the castle does shows it was an important settlement between the 12th and 14th centuries. - Made of Wool
It isn’t literally made of wool and linen but it did prosper thanks to trading in both. - Old Stuff
The town’s history is recorded in the museum which along with the library is housed in the original school house built in 1839.

Sitting on the old Fosse Way, a Roman road that ran across what was to become the Kingdom of Wessex, Mere is a historic town with a castle and close proximity to the MODs largest training ground, Salisbury Plain.
The town has a number of delightful buildings and good independent shops. Surrounded by stunning countryside it offers great escapes in an area dominated with agriculture plus woodland, bike trails and a number of riding stables.
Leisure
It really is all about the great outdoors. There is so much to get out and see in this neck of the Wiltshire woods. There are a number of showgrounds nearby with major annual attractions (Motcombe, Bath & West Showground, Frome) plus Wincanton Racecourse if you fancy a punt. There are also a number of local societies for a variety of interests and hobbies.
