    Farnborough – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Farnborough Henge?
      There is evidence that Sarsen stones, like those at Stonehenge, once stood on top of nearby Tower Hill.
    2. Balloonatics!
      It was the site of the Army Balloon Factory, who were a potty bunch, inventing and making all manner of flying contraptions. This early pioneering led to it becoming the site of the UK’s first airfield.
    3. Another 1st
      It was also the site of the first powered flight in the UK by Samuel Cody flying ‘British Army Aeroplane No 1’ in 1908. Cody was a colourful character who had been a Wild West showman who styled himself on and even claimed to the son of William ‘Buffalo Bill’ Cody ‘. He also invented Cody War Kites that were used by British troops before WWI.
    4. Top Gear
      IQ Farnborough (a business park and home to a number of major UK companies) was once used as a race track by Jermeny Clarkson and co on the BBC’s Top Gear.
    5. Hanging In There
      The giant structure sitting inside the business park is an airship hanger dating back to 1910. The hanger had been torn down but was rebuilt and now has Grade II listed status.
    6. Highway Robbery!
      The most famous highwaymen of them all, Dick Turpin, operated in the area around here in the early 18th Century.

    Population – The You.Gov census in 2011 estimated the population at 65,000.

    Transport – Just south of the M3, close to the Surrey Hills, 16 minutes form the M25, it has excellent transport links. To the south the A3 leads to the South Coast including Havant, Portsmouth and Chichester. Heathrow Airport is a convenient 23 minutes away and trains to central London can take just 34 minutes.

    Cheese room, butchers, fish room, dairy, gift barn, café… There are just so many reasons to love this fantastic farm shop serving the finest produce. They even have a cookery school! A must see.

    OK, technically they are just outside town, but we’re not going to quibble when the beer is this good! These guys are one of the best arguments ever for ‘buying local’.

    About Farnborough

    It’s very much a modern town. You won’t find many historic houses or quaint museums. What it does have is modern hotels, all the large UK chains for shops and services, even the 16th century coach house and inn was converted into a McDonalds. Yep, this is a town for forward thinkers with its annual air show and excellent links to London and the surrounding area.

    Leisure

    You’ll find a number of gyms in and around town. If you prefer your exercise to go with a swing, you’re spoilt for choice with excellent golf courses within easy striking distance. There are cycle paths, forests, woodland and tow paths to explore and stay healthy and so much variety you certainly won’t get bored in a hurry.

    There’s also a cinema and a selection of theatres in neighbouring towns. In fact, with the great network of towns in the area, there’s no hobby, pastime, sports club or group you won’t find locally, whether you want to try something new or are looking to keep doing something you’re passionate about.

    Transport

    Close to the Surrey Hills, within shouting distance of the M3 and 16 minutes from the M25, 16 minutes from the M25, it’s considered an excellent commuter town. There are good links to the west, while the A3 runs direct to the south coast. By train you can be in central London in 34 minutes.
