The Applegarth Emporium, 8 High Street, BA9 9JP
Wincanton is rightly proud of its links with the Discworld series and this quirky and deeply knowledgeable shop celebrates all things Pratchett.
41 High Street, BA9 9JU
Best known for its famous horse racing track, Wincanton is very much a rural community. The town’s heritage is interlinked with horses, from the old stagecoach route that linked Exeter and London, to the farming community that is strong in this part of Somerset, if you can grow it, raise it, cultivate or nurture it, the chances are you’ll find it in Wincanton.
Wincanton falls into the ’brilliantly bonkers’ category that makes Somerset such a great county to live. The town twinned itself with an imaginary town (featured in the Discworld books by Sir Terry Pratchett), has a suitably madcap carnival and other local events.
There is a sports centre with swimming pool, gym, classes and children’s activities. If you prefer your exercise at a more leisurely pace, Wincanton golf course is a short stroll from the town centre. Perhaps the biggest local draw, Wincanton Racecourse holds a number of meets over the year and also other live events and entertainment.
Conveniently located just off the A303, 25 minutes from Yeovil and just over an hour from Bristol (location of the closest airport), Wincanton offers access to the Blackmore Vale and Cranborne Chase AONB. There is no train station, the nearest being 12 minutes away in Templecombe. The racecourse is within easy walking distance of the town centre.
