Portland Facts – Did you know…
- Don’t Say “Rabbit”
The isle has its own wonderfully eccentric superstitions such as, never saying the word ‘rabbit’. Allegedly, there are so many warrens crossing the island, that just mentioning the furry fiends could cause Portland to collapse. - Smugglers Paradise
Owing to its location and remoteness, smuggling was rife on the island which has also housed several prisons and a naval base during its colourful history. - Jurassic Park
Portland is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site the Jurassic Coast. Prehistoric fossils have been found on the isle and surrounding coastland. - Viking Raiders
The first recorded arrival of Vikings to Britain occurred in Portland in 789. Three lost Viking ships landed on the island, when the king’s reeve tried to collect taxes from them, they killed him and sailed on. - Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Cenotaph were all constructed using Portland Stone. Six million tonnes of the local limestone were used to rebuild London after the Great Fire in 1666. - Rufus Castle
The original Rufus Castle was built for William II by his father, William the Conqueror. In 1959 Henry the VIII had the current castle built at a cost of cost £4,964 to defend against French invasion.

About Portland
Windblown, quirky, beautiful, Portland is as romantic as it is idyllic. Not as easily accessible as other Dorset locations, the lack of traffic and decrease in tourist numbers only adds to the isle’s many attractions.
Leisure
Locals enjoy an abundance of fine cafes, bars and eateries across and of course the seafood is world class. When you’re not eating, you can burn off the calories exploring the coastline or taking part in the many sports available. The island might not be blessed with retail therapy but what the few shops lack in quantity, they more than make up for in quality.
There is also a theatre/cinema with a vibrant mix of shows and screenings throughout the year.
Transport
With just one route connecting Portland with the mainland buses head to nearby Weymouth every ten minutes. Dorchester (thirty minutes and Bournemouth (75 minutes) are both easy to reach while there is also a rail station, trains to London take in excess of three hours.
