Dating back to 880 BCE Shaftesbury is a quaint and attractive town with historic buildings, tasty cafes, restaurants and bars, nestled in spectacular countryside. The town owes its success in part to the abbey built by Alfred the Great. Today the town has wealth of independent stores and is ideally suited to explore the many villages and places of outstanding natural beauty in the area.
The town boasts two museums, a large number of architecturally interesting and listed buildings, as well as parks and scenic walks. There are also festivals, events and markets throughout the calendar.
The A350 runs just to the east of the town connecting with the A303, with routes to the South West and London, before heading on to the picturesque town of Warminster. Driving south the road leads to Poole and routes on to Bournemouth and Southampton. There isn’t a train station (although there have been murmurings for the route to be reopened) and the nearest station is Gillingham, a 15-minute drive.
